A few weeks ago Sony and Bell Media announced a deal to launch a new “next-generation digital destination” that will include thousands of hours of content from Sony Pictures Television. According to the press release every week no content would be added from the CTV catalog and Sony Pictures Television. It is very possible this deal first announced in early June 2018 may be partly to blame for Sony Crackle shutting down in Canada.
Crackel first launched back in 2004 as Grouper a peer-to-peer media sharing site that was trying to compete with YouTube. In 2006 Sony Pictures purchased Grouper and renamed the service to Crackle in 2018. In 2010 Sony launched Crackle in Canada to expand the service outside of the United States. Last year Sony announced that they would rename Crackle to Sony Crackle to better tie the service to its parent company.
