‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Finishes Third Week as Most-Watched Movie

Paramount Home Entertainment’s new release Sonic the Hedgehog has been in the No.1 one spot for the most-watched in-home movie for three weeks straight, beating out The Invisible Man and Birds of Prey.

Sonic the Hedgehog made a brief debut in domestic theaters back in February making $146 million at the box office before COVID-19 shut down the country mid-March. After that, the film was released digitally for purchase-only on March 31. Now for the third week in a row, it ended June 6 as the most popular movie people are watching at home.

Here are the top 10 on the “Watched at Home” titles this week:

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog (Paramount)
  2. The Invisible Man (Universal)
  3. Birds of Prey (Warner)
  4. Bad Boys for Life (Sony)
  5. Jumanji: The Next Level (Sony)
  6. Bloodshot (Sony, 2020)
  7. Fantasy Island (Sony)
  8. The Call of the Wild (Disney, 2020)
  9. Onward (Disney)
  10. Rick and Morty: Season 4 (Warner)

This spring has been a strange one for movie releases with all theaters shutting down during quarantine months. Now, The National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) has predicted that 90% of the country’s movie theaters will be open by July, just in time for the release of new movies like Disney’s live-action Mulan Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.

Although it seems as though home releases have done surprisingly well. Viewers have obviously responded positively to the digital release of Sonic, while ‘Trolls World Tour’ earned a reported $100 million in video rentals in its first three weeks in North America and was FandangoNOW’s most preordered film ever. Stats like these have led NBCUniversal to announce a plan to double dip and release movies both in theaters and on-demand simultaneously.

Movie theaters, however, aren’t so keen on the idea and AMC even went as far as saying they wouldn’t show any NBCUniversal films if that was the case.
