Some Comcast Customers Personal Data Was Leaked In a FBCS Data Breach

Comcast has become the latest company to disclose customer data exposure stemming from a data breach at Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS), a debt collection agency. This revelation adds another layer to an already extensive data breach that has impacted millions of individuals.

FBCS initially reported the breach in April 2024, stating that unauthorized access to its network between February 14 and 26 resulted in the theft of sensitive personal information, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and driver’s license numbers. The number of individuals affected has steadily risen from an initial estimate of 1.9 million to a staggering 4.2 million, according to a report from BleepingComputer.com.

Comcast, a major cable and internet provider, was initially assured by FBCS that its customer data was not compromised. However, in July, FBCS revised its statement, confirming that data belonging to over 273,000 Comcast customers was indeed exposed. This information included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and Comcast account numbers.

Truist Bank, a leading financial institution, has also begun notifying customers of potential data exposure due to the FBCS breach. The bank has not yet disclosed the number of affected customers.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, FBCS, facing financial difficulties presumably linked to the breach, has informed affected entities that they will be responsible for notifying and assisting impacted individuals.

Comcast has started sending out data breach notifications to its affected customers, offering 12 months of free identity theft protection services.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the interconnected nature of data security in today’s business landscape. Even if a company takes strong security measures, it can still be vulnerable to breaches that occur within its partners or vendors.
