Sling Was Announced at CES 5 Years Ago & It Changed The World of Cord Cutting

Five years ago this month, at CES 2015, Dish announced that they would be launching a new service called Sling TV. Some said that the new service would be the stuff that cord cutters’ dreams were made of, while others were slightly more skeptical about a setup that looked like the online version of cable.

When Sling TV launched, it came with a price of $20/month and was marketed as “the perfect complement to Netflix and Hulu.” The service only allowed for one stream at once and did not include a DVR.

Since then, Sling has added to the channel lineups of Sling Orange, Sling Blue, and its various add-ons. Some features have been added and others updated, including the addition of a DVR and a recent update to make DVR space available to every subscriber. Millions of subscribers have chosen Sling as their source of live and on-demand content, from sports to news to entertainment, all while remaining an affordable and user friendly alternative to cable TV.

Recently, Sling TV was named one of the most influential products of the decade by Consumer Reports. Now with over 2.69 million subscribers, the streaming service is showing no signs of slowing down. We look forward to seeing what the next five years will bring for Sling.
