Sling TV Tops 600,000 Monthly Subscribers

SlingSling TV, the online streaming service that gives you access to cable channels starting at just $20 a month, has been secretive about their subscriber’s numbers. A report in the Wall Street Journal says that people who have seen the numbers are reporting that Sling TV now tops 600,000 monthly subscribers.

For a service that is just a year old, 600,000 subscribers is impressive, and another sign of the continued growth of cord cutting. Although Sling TV still falls short of the millions of subscribers that Netflix or Hulu has, the growth is still strong.

The strength of services like Sling, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, and many more are not a sign that people want content online. It shows the demand from cord cutters looking for content on their terms: smaller, more flexible packages and the ability to watch content when and how they want.

Often people think cord cutting is all about just accessing content online; however, when you look at services that just copy the cable model and move it online you see less success and hear less buzz. Sony Vue is a great example of a service that just copies cable without offering anything original to their streaming.

Hopefully new services copy the Sling TV and Netflix models and offer cord cutters more options.
