Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, DIRECTV NOW, & Others Approach 7 Million Subscribers

Family Watching Television Together Arguing Over RemoteThis week, Michael Goodman from Strategy Analytics released a report on the current state of live TV streaming services. According to that report, live TV streaming services like Sling TV, Hulu, DIRECTV NOW, fuboTV, and others together are nearing 7 million subscribers.

Here are the current subscriber counts according to Strategy Analytics:

Remember that many of these numbers are educated guesses based on multiple factors. Some services like Sling TV, DIRECTV NOW, Hulu, and others have released hard numbers. Others like PlayStation Vue are only educated guesses. With that said, these numbers are in line with other reports from other analysis.

What is interesting to see is that while there are roughly 30 million cord cutter households in the United States, only about 7 million of them subscribe to a live TV streaming service. This means most have decided that they just don’t have a need for a live TV streaming service.

For all the talk about how cable companies hope to get customers back by offering a live TV streaming service, so far less than half of cord cutters have decided to subscribe to one of the live TV streaming services. If that number continues it could put a huge strain on major cable companies who had hoped to use streaming revenue to replace traditional cable TV customers.
