Cord Cutters News

Sling TV, DIRECTV NOW, YouTube TV, & Others Saw a 54% Increase in Viewing Hours

Channel Surfing ManLast week we saw a record number of people cut the cord on companies like AT&T. Now the research group Conviva has released a study that shows live TV streaming services saw a 54% jump in year-over-year hours viewed. (This study looked at services like Sling TV, Hulu, fuboTV, Philo, and PlayStation Vue.)

“Streaming TV consumption shows no signs of slowing down, and publishers have stepped up to the plate, delivering better quality and reliability that viewers have come to expect,” said Conviva CEO Bill Demas. “The demand for quality is pushing connected TVs to the top in terms of device share, commanding more than 50 percent of total viewing hours at the expense of PCs that have lost 7 percent while mobile remains relatively flat.”

This all comes as Comcast, AT&T, Spectrum, and Verizon Fios have reported pay-TV subscriber losses totaling 669,000. According to the earning reports, Verizon Fios lost 151,000 subscribersComcast lost 106,000 subscribersSpectrum lost 66,000 subscribers, and AT&T lost 346,000 subscribers totaling 669,000 lost subscribers in the third quarter of 2018. This works out to 233,000 Americans canceling traditional pay-TV every month or about 7,700 people canceling cable TV every day. At this rate, just these four pay-TV providers will lose almost 2.8 million subscribers over the next year.

With cable subscriber numbers continuing to fall maybe it is no surprise that streaming hours are growing.
