After a nearly decade-long partnership, new episodes of “Sesame Street” will no longer air on Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service, Max. The company has opted not to renew its deal with Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind the iconic children’s program according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

While Max will continue to offer episodes from the “Sesame Street” library through 2027, the upcoming 55th season will be the last to debut on the streamer. This decision comes as Max shifts its focus away from children’s content and towards more adult and family-oriented programming.

A Historic Partnership

“Sesame Street” first found a streaming home on HBO in 2016, a move that proved crucial to the show’s survival as children’s viewing habits shifted and DVD sales dwindled. The partnership with HBO, and later Max, provided Sesame Workshop with a vital revenue stream and ensured that the beloved program could continue to educate and entertain young viewers.

Shifting Strategies

However, with Max now prioritizing different demographics, “Sesame Street” is once again seeking a new home. Sesame Workshop expressed its commitment to finding new distribution channels to ensure the show reaches as many children as possible.

“We are excited to extend our 10-year partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, keeping ‘Sesame Street’s’ iconic library available on Max through 2027,” said a spokesperson for Sesame Workshop. “We will continue to invest in our best-in-class programming and look forward to announcing our new distribution plans in the coming months, ensuring that ‘Sesame Street’ reaches as many children as possible for generations to come.”

The Future of “Sesame Street”

While the departure from Max marks a significant change for “Sesame Street,” the show’s enduring popularity and educational value suggest that it will find a new home. Potential destinations could include other streaming services, traditional television networks, or even educational platforms.

As “Sesame Street” embarks on this new chapter, its legacy of providing quality educational programming for children remains strong. The show’s impact on generations of viewers is undeniable, and its future remains bright as it seeks new avenues to connect with young audiences.
