Max has announced that with the release of Season 2 of The Last of Us, there will also be a version available to stream in American Sign Language (ASL). This is the first time that HBO is making its original programming available in ASL on Max.
The ASL episodes will be available alongside each week’s episodes, beginning with the Season 2 premiere on Sunday, April 13 at 9 p.m. ET. ASL episodes of Season 1 will be available to stream starting Friday, March 31 for those who want to watch or re-watch before the next season begins.
“We are thrilled to expand our ASL program and debut our first HBO Original series in ASL with The Last of Us,” said Naomi Waibel, SVP of Global Product Management at WBD. “This debut brings the show to life in an authentic and fully accessible way for Deaf audiences and is another meaningful step towards our goal of offering an inclusive streaming experience.”
The ASL translation will be done by Daniel Durant (“Coda”) and Leila Hanaumi who was featured in the ASL version of Barbie.
While this is the first time an HBO original series will be available in ASL, there are several titles already available to stream in ASL on the platform. Those include Barbie, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Offering content for ASL viewers is part of Max’s commitment to making streaming accessible for all subscribers.
Titles are marked as “With ASL” and will feature key art with the sign language symbol.
