Scripps Continues Layoffs at Local News Stations

Following a trend of local news stations letting go of staff, KGTV 10News in San Diego has laid off around 20 staffers. The Scripps-owned station reportedly lost photographers, producers, and a receptionist this week.

A report from Times of San Diego shared the names of those who were impacted by this round of layoffs. Leon Clark, VP and general manager for KGTV for ABC 10 News said that the decision was made due to Scripps responding to “evolving viewer habits and the continuing disruptions with the broadcasting industry.”

“The 10News team remains committed to listening to and reporting on the stories where we live and work,” Clark said. “We still have a large team of reporters that are integrated into communities across the San Diego area, delivering the news and information that matter to our viewers.”

Earlier this month, Scripps announced that it would be laying off staff in its news department, impacting around a dozen stations, with no plan to replace the eliminated positions.

“The media industry is in a state of continued disruption and, while difficult, these changes are part of Scripps’ ongoing commitment to adapt through this disruption and ensure we can continue providing our communities with essential services well into the future.” A Scripps spokesperson said to Cord Cutters News at the time of the announcement.

Scripps owns 61 stations in 41 markets. The company-wide layoffs are said to have affected several hundred employees.
