Cord Cutters News

We Saw The 5G Home Internet Demo at CES 2018

There were a few big cord cutting trends at CES 2018. One of them was 5G home Internet. 5G home Internet brings the promise of fiber Internet speeds without the cost of running fiber to each house. With 5G you will be able to get 5G Internet wirelessly to your home, which is a dream many cord cutters have had for years.

The hope is to cut the time it takes to wire a city with fiber Internet from years to months. At CES I got my first in-person demo of 5G home Internet in action.

Here is the demo Intel was offering of 5G home Internet in action running at CES 2018:

Intel is not the only company testing out 5G home Internet. Verizon has been hard at work testing 5G home Internet in several US markets. Here is a quick look at the work Verizon is doing with 5G.

Both AT&T and Verizon have announced that 5G Internet will start to roll out to a handful of markets in late 2018. A few other smaller companies already have 5G networks being built with the goal of having markets like Washington DC covered with 5G shortly. Dish and others who are working on 5G home Internet have said by the end of 2020 they plan to have 5G covering half of the US population.

Look for 5G to roll out in major markets first as providers try to quickly recover their 5G investments by offering it to highly populated areas. Also look for rural areas to see 5G roll out starting next year as providers try to grow their markets by offering 5G in markets underserviced by current broadband providers.
