Amazon is making it easier than ever to upgrade your devices and save money in the process. The Amazon Trade-In Program lets you turn in your used electronics for Amazon.com Gift Cards and, in many cases, get 20% off of a new Amazon device. Whether you’re swapping out an old Fire TV Stick, Kindle, or Echo speaker, it’s a smart way to refresh your tech and not break the bank.
How the Program Works
To get started, select the device you want to trade in and answer a few quick questions about its condition. Amazon will give you an estimated trade-in value, which you’ll receive as an Amazon.com Gift Card after your item is received and verified. If you’re trading in an Amazon device, you may also get 20% off a new one in the same category, applied as either an instant discount or a rebate after purchase.
Eligible categories for the 20% discount include Kindle e-readers, Echo smart speakers, Fire TV Sticks, Fire Tablets, Ring and Blink home security products, and routers. Cell phones and video game items can still be traded in, but they only qualify for gift card credit, not discounts.
Send It In and Save
Once your trade-in is confirmed, you can ship your device for free via UPS or drop it off at a participating location. If your item qualifies for Instant Payment, you’ll get your gift card and any eligible discount right away. Otherwise, your benefits are issued after Amazon inspects your device.
You’re limited to one promotional discount per device category each calendar quarter, but there’s no limit to how many items you can trade in for gift card credit, as long as they meet Amazon’s criteria.
Amazon says the program is part of its broader effort to promote sustainability. Traded-in devices that are still functional are refurbished and resold through Amazon Warehouse, while those that don’t qualify are responsibly recycled. If your device isn’t eligible for trade-in, you can still send it in for free recycling.
