Samsung’s New Freestyle Packs Streaming Smarts into a Portable Projector

Samsung The Freestyle Lifestyle 02

Update: Added pricing info and a link to the US preorder page.

It turns out Samsung is not quite done with product announcements for CES 2022. Its latest reveal focuses on a device that mashes up a portable projector, smart speaker, and ambient light and sprinkles some streaming capabilities on top.

It’s called the Freestyle, and the cylindrical device lets users project content onto surfaces of up to 100 inches at a max resolution of 1080p. Samsung says advanced onboard sensors help the device auto level and adjust so that the displayed image is presented with the correct proportions.

The company is touting its flexibility, including the ability to work with external batteries for power. It also mounts directly into an E26 light socket, drawing power like a light bulb.

Beyond the projector features, the new device can also serve as a smart speaker. Users can also snap on a translucent lens cap that converts the projected photons into mood lighting.

Samsung says the Freestyle supports features similar to its line of smart TVs, including built-in streaming service apps, and content mirroring and casting with compatible Android and iOS devices.

Preorders for the device are expected to start on Jan. 4th in the US, with international availability expected in the coming months. The preorder page is now live and those interested can reserve a Freestyle for $899.99
