The company’s display unit, Samsung Display, had already closed an LCD production line in October of last year as demand for LCD panels declined. Meanwhile, the report says the company is investing over $10 billion to upgrade its manufacturing, including converting an LCD production line to focus on Samsung’s quantum dot panels, which are still based on LCD tech, but leverage very small molecules of different sizes to produce colors.
The report cited falling demand for LCD displays in both smartphones and TVs, as both device categories shift toward other, more advanced display technologies. OLEDs, for example, are becoming increasingly popular, with Samsung rival LG championing the newer tech in its high-end TVs. More recently, other TV manufactures, like Sony and Vizio, have announced new models boasting OLED tech instead of LCD.
Meanwhile, Apple has recently started opting for OLED displays in its higher-end smartphones, including the iPhone 11 Pro. Its lower-end phones, like the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR still use LCD panels, however.
The move follows a similar announcement from LG, which said it’s also looking to end domestic production of LCD TV panels in South Korea by year’s end.
