Samsung Announces a New 5G Modem

Later this year AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have all announced plans to launch a 5G home internet network in the United States. Dish, Charter, Sprint, and others have also said they plan to launch their own 5G networks in the next year or so. Now Samsung has announced a new 5G modem that is fully compliant with the new 5G standards being used by these networks.

“Samsung’s leadership in communication technologies and market-proven knowledge allowed us to develop the industry’s first 5G modem, the Exynos Modem 5100, which fully complies with the latest 3GPP standards,” said Dr. Inyup Kang, president and head of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics. “As the industry prepares the shift toward 5G, Samsung will continue to drive the growth of innovative ideas and new services in mobile applications and other emerging industries.”

The best part is not only will this new chip work with the new 5G standard it will also work with legacy networks, including 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, and 4G LTE, all on a single chip.

The chip can pull in a maximum download speed of 2 Gbps on 5G and 1.6 Gbps on 4G networks. The chip is also small enough to fit into phones and a wide range of products to expand Internet of Things. This means soon everything from your car to your appliances may be using 5G internet.
