Roku TV & Roku Player Users Plagued by App Loading Failures – Here is How to Fix It

Roku devices across the United States are experiencing widespread issues that prevent many apps from loading properly. Reports from users have surged in recent days, highlighting a problem that strikes seemingly at random, disrupting evening entertainment routines and leaving cord-cutters without access to their favorite content. The malfunction appears to affect a variety of models, from the affordable Roku Express to higher-end options like the Roku Ultra, impacting millions of households that rely on the platform for affordable, cable-free viewing.

Update #2: Roku has confirmed that they fixed it but you may need to reboot your Roku for your apps to load correctly.

Update: Roku has confirmed the issue to Cord Cutters News saying “Roku is aware of an issue with being unable to access Roku services. If you are trying to access apps on your Roku device, please try again later.”

The core of the problem lies in Roku’s built-in hibernation feature, designed to conserve resources by suspending inactive apps in the background and een removing apps not often used. This energy-saving mechanism, intended to optimize performance and free up space on Roku, has backfired today. When users attempt to relaunch a hibernated app, the device struggles to load it, often failing to laod the app or redownload it. As a result, Roku users failed to be able to laod the app. This randomness means one moment Netflix might work flawlessly, while the next, Pluto TV—a popular free service offering movies, TV shows, and live channels—refuses to boot up at all. Other major services, including Hulu, Prime Video, and YouTube TV, have also been implicated in user complaints, turning what should be a seamless streaming experience into a gamble.

We have confirmed that the glitches occur in our Tech Lab on multiple Roku palyers and Roku TVs, particularly after periods of inactivity. Providers like Pluto TV and Netflix report no server-side outages during the affected times, further isolating the problem to Roku players.

Roku, which powers over 80 million active accounts worldwide and dominates the streaming device market, has not yet issued an official statement on the outage. However, community forums and social media platforms are flooded with similar stories. Users describe the frustration of preparing for a family movie night only to encounter endless buffering or abrupt closures, forcing them to restart devices multiple times. For cord-cutters who have invested in Roku as a budget-friendly alternative to expensive cable packages, this unreliability undermines the platform’s appeal. Many have turned to temporary workarounds, such as manually closing all apps before use or performing frequent system restarts via the remote’s secret sequence—pressing home five times, up once, rewind twice, and fast forward twice. While these tricks provide short-term relief by clearing temporary cache and forcing a reboot, they do not address the underlying hibernation bug, which seems tied to recent firmware updates aimed at improving efficiency.

The company has a history of rolling out over-the-air updates to fix similar glitches, such as past app crashes linked to memory overflows. In the meantime, affected users are advised to check for manual software updates in the settings menu under System > System Update, as some have reported partial success with this step.
