Roku Is Still Dominating the Streaming Market

For years now we have heard how Roku is dominating the streaming market. Now we get an updated look at the dominance of Roku in the United States and Canada.

Recently TiVo released a new study that talked with over 3,000 Americans and Canadians about their TV viewing habits. As part of the study they asked participants if they own a streaming player. They came back with the following results: 14.7% of all respondents said they own a Roku player, 9.2% own a Fire TV, 8.9% own an Apple TV, and 8.7% own a Chromecast.

What was most interesting was the fact that almost 40% of respondents said they did not own any type of streaming player including Smart TVs, gaming consoles, or Wi-Fi-enabled Blu-ray players.

When talking with respondents who do not have a streaming player their main reason was “I don’t need one in addition to my cable/satellite service.” The second most popular reason was “I’m not familiar with streaming devices.”

Most Americans still use Smart TVs to stream content at 25.2% and gaming consoles at 23.7%. In total 60.1% of all respondents said they had some type of streaming device.

With the rollout of new Fire TV and Apple TV devices it will be interesting to see what these numbers look like in a year.
