Back when Roku announced OS version 9.4 was on the way, it also mentioned that support for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit would soon follow. And now that OS 9.4 is rolling out to various devices, the company has followed up to announce the Apple-centric updates are now available on supported streaming devices. Meanwhile, certain 4K Roku TV models should see the update “in the coming days.”
“With regular automatic software updates, the Roku OS enables consumers to easily get to the entertainment they want via the new features we add over time,” Ilya Asnis, senior vice president of Roku OS, said in a press release. “With Roku OS 9.4 now available on streaming players, we are adding all-new ways to navigate and control content-rich experiences on Roku devices as well as ensuring Roku devices provide a great entertainment experience for customers, regardless of what other technology products they prefer in their homes and particularly with the addition of Apple AirPlay and HomeKit.”
AirPlay 2 lets users stream content from various Apple devices to supported Roku devices. Meanwhile, HomeKit support allows you to control Roku gear through Apple’s Home app.
As for device support, the company has support pages that list models compatible with AirPlay 2:
- Roku TV models Axxxx, Cxxxx, CxxGB, 7xxxx
- Streambar model 9102x
- Smart Soundbar models 9101x, 9100x
- Ultra models 4800x, 4670x, 4661x, 4662x, 4660x, 4640x
- Premiere models 4630x, 4620x, 3920x
- Streaming Stick+ models 3811x, 3810x
If your device hasn’t received version 9.4 just yet, it might be worth heading to the Settings menu, scrolling to System, and then System Update. You should be able to press the Check Now button to see if the latest OS update is available for your device.
