Roku recently launched The Roku Channel as a way to watch free movies and TV shows. The service so far has been well received by many cord cutters because it has deals with major studios such as Lionsgate, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Sony Pictures, and Warner Bros. and smaller publishers such as American Classics, Fandor, FilmRise, Nosey, OVGuide, Popcornflix, Vidmark, and YuYu.
Now Variety is reporting that Roku has been asking their content partners for new rights to stream their movies and TV shows on mobile devices.
The move to expand the footprint of The Roku Channel to new devices makes sense for Roku. Roku is one of the largest sellers of video ads and all the ads on The Roku Channel are sold by Roku. The more people who use the service, the more revenue Roku gets from their ads.
Roku also already has experience developing for Android and iOS with their Roku apps. So it would be a logical step to use that team to build a Roku Channel app for these devices to expand their footprint.
Roku declined to comment to Variety on these reports.
