Roku is sharing preliminary numbers for Q4 2020, showing that there are now 51.2 million active Roku accounts as of December 31, 2020. That’s an additional 14 million accounts for the year.

Roku also increased total streaming hours for the year, reaching 58.7 billion streaming hours in 2020, a 55% increase year over year.

“I’m excited that more than 50 million households now turn to Roku for their TV viewing,” said Roku CEO Anthony Wood. “The world is moving to streaming and we look forward to continuing to help viewers, advertisers, content publishers, and TV manufacturers succeed in the Streaming Decade.”

The pandemic was obviously a factor in the increase of streaming hours in 2020, along with an ongoing trend toward cord cutting. eMarketer predicts that by the end of 2024, fewer than half of U.S. households will subscribe to a traditional pay TV service.
