Roku Now Has 43 Million Active Accounts

In today’s quarter 2 earnings report, Roku announced that its active account growth accelerated by 41% year over year. There are now 43 million active Roku accounts. Roku said the growth was driven by “strong sales of both players and Roku TV models throughout the quarter.”

Roku player unit sales were up 28% year over year, with growth in both the US and some international markets. Worth noting, Roku sales weren’t just for new users. Existing Roku users added nearly 3 million new Roku streaming devices to their accounts during the quarter. Roku also notes that Roku TV sales made up one in three smart TV purchases in the US.

Along with device sales, Roku shared numbers for its free streaming service, The Roku Channel. According to the quarterly report, The Roku Channel more than doubled its reach in the US. By the end of the quarter, The Roku Channel was watched by an estimated 43 million viewers.

Roku also made an announcement that Steve Louden will continue in his role as CFO after relocating to Seattle, a move that the company originally said would lead to Louden ushering in a new CFO.

“Steve has deep knowledge of the business and has helped Roku navigate a fast-moving industry environment,” said Anthony Wood. “I’m very pleased that Steve will be continuing in this leadership role at Roku at such an important time.” Steve Louden added: “Roku is an exceptional company with a strong performance culture and we’ve only just begun to see the full transition to streaming.”
