Roku is Testing a Roku Ultra With an Improved Remote. Here’s What it Looks Like

Roku is beta testing a new model that appears to be an updated Roku Ultra with a remote packing new buttons, based on photos of a development units obtained by Cord Cutters News.

Pictures of the new unit show a model number of 4850X on the device and a “SKU” number of 4850R on the box. The current Roku Ultra first released in 2020 has a model number in the 4800 range, which suggest this device could be the latest member of the Roku Ultra family.

The pictures offer a look into what could be the next version of Roku’s highest end model, although it’s unclear if this is the final version or if it will come out at all. As more people cut the cord, they’re increasingly looking at different streaming platforms, where Roku is the largest player. The Roku Ultra typically sells for $99.99 and boasts all of the latest features and fastest processor, and is four times more expensive than its entry Roku Express box.

From the photos, the biggest change is likely the new remote, which includes two new buttons. The first is a guide button that will quickly launch you into the Roku guide, which may eventually become the new home screen. There is also a second new button with a rocket icon, but at this time, that’ll it doesn’t do anything but give an error message, according to the person who used the device and sent Cord Cutters News the images. The new Guide button could show how Roku is going to make a live TV guide that includes both streaming channels from The Roku Channel and your antenna a bigger part of the Roku OS.

The body of the Roku is similar to existing Ultra units, albeit a bit rounder, with the rear appearing to have a blue USB port suggesting it’s the improved 3.0 variant. USB 3.0 that will support higher data speeds and likely make it available to be used with newer external hard drives that run on the newest standard.

Sadly we don’t have all the specs and are uncertain if this new Roku will have improved WiFi, processor, or on board storage.

A spokesperson for Roku wasn’t immediately available to comment on the validity of the images or whether a new Ultra would come out. Roku typically unveils its latest line up in the fall.
