Roku is Rolling Out a New User Interface For Its Stock Roku Channels

This week, Roku announced a major overhaul of its stock Roku Channels with the introduction of the SceneGraph Developer Extensions 2.0, also known as SGDEX 2.0. With SGDEX 2.0, Roku gives developers creating new Roku Channels a template to build from that is a huge step forward from where Roku has been in the past. Long gone are the ugly, outdated stock Roku Channels in favor of the more beautiful user interface.

Here are a few examples of what the new Roku Channels will look like with SGDEX 2.0:

SearchView

With SearchView, Roku has completely updated the search box. Now you will get search results in a standard grid instead of a text list making it easier to find the content you want.

TimeGridView

Roku is also now offering a prebuilt grid guide for Roku channels called TimeGridView. This new grid guide should help Roku Channel Developers easily let you look into the future in a way that anyone who has used cable before will be right at home with.

One of the Roku Channels already is using this new SGDEX 2.0 interface is the FreeForm channel from Disney. With the FreeForm Roku channel, you can now see how the new SGDEX 2.0 menus will look.

As you can see, these new menus are a huge step up from the older stock Roku channels. Roku is also letting Roku Channel Developers expand upon their theme with options like custom load icons, and other changes to give their Roku channels more personality.
