Roku is Reportedly Working a Wi-Fi Extender to Improve Streaming Called Roku Relay

Today Bloomberg reported that Roku is developing a Wi-Fi extender called Roku Relay. This device is designed to help fix buffered caused by weak Wi-Fi. When looking at the causes of buffering weak Wi-Fi is typically one of the main causes.

According to Bloomberg, the device is still being developed and Roku has not decided on if they will even sell the device yet. Yet it looks like the device is fairly far along in development. According to the report, the device is only 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide. It will plug into a wall outlet and allow you to extend your current W-iFi network.

Recently Roku increased spending and their R&D team size. Roku increased spending on R&D to $21.6 million—a 63% jump over the same period in 2018. It is very possible that part of this spending increase was for devices like the Roku Relay.

Roku said most of their 63% increase in R&D came from a higher engineering headcount. Roku spent $17.1 million on engineers for the R&D team. Roku also spent $1.8 million on platform and product development and $2.7 million on expenses like consulting and outside services
