Roku announced this month a comprehensive update to its app certification criteria aimed at enhancing user experience across its streaming platform. The changes, which will take effect progressively through 2026, focus on improving seamless resumption of the last movie or TV show you where watching when you launch an app, expanding accessibility features globally, and tightening integration standards for developers. This move reflects Roku’s ongoing commitment to delivering a more consistent and user-friendly streaming environment for millions of households worldwide.
The most significant addition in the update is the mandatory implementation of Roku’s Instant Resume feature for larger apps on Roku TVs and Roku Players. Starting October 1, 2026, all apps available in the U.S. Streaming Store that surpass specified streaming thresholds will be required to support Instant Resume. This technology allows viewers to pick up exactly where they left off in a program or movie, even when switching between devices or returning to the app after an extended break. By automating the resumption process without manual intervention, Instant Resume eliminates frustrating delays and enhances convenience for users who frequently multitask or consume content across multiple sessions. Roku officials indicated that the threshold for applicability will be based on monthly viewing hours and active user engagement metrics, ensuring that only higher-traffic applications face the new obligation while smaller or niche apps receive additional time to adapt.
In parallel, Roku is broadening the scope of its Continue Watching requirement. Previously limited to applications within the U.S. Streaming Store, this feature will now extend to apps operating outside the U.S. market that also meet defined streaming volume thresholds. Continue Watching maintains a personalized list of in-progress titles on the Roku home screen, enabling quick access and encouraging sustained viewer engagement. The expansion aims to create a more uniform experience for international audiences, many of whom have expressed a desire for better cross-border functionality. Developers with significant viewership in regions such as Europe, Latin America, and Asia will need to integrate the necessary backend support to sync viewing progress reliably. This change is expected to benefit global content providers by increasing retention rates and simplifying navigation for users who travel or maintain accounts in multiple countries.
Another notable adjustment involves the Deep Linking requirement. Roku has eliminated the previous exemption granted to live streams and replays. Under the revised criteria, all qualifying apps must now implement Deep Linking capabilities regardless of content type. Deep Linking permits users to jump directly from promotional tiles, search results, or recommendation rows on the Roku interface straight into specific episodes, movies, or live events within an app. Removing the exemption for live and replay content ensures that time-sensitive programming, such as sports broadcasts, news updates, and episodic replays, becomes as easily discoverable and accessible as on-demand titles. This standardization is anticipated to drive higher click-through rates and reduce the friction that previously caused viewers to abandon searches or lose interest during browsing sessions.
With the October 2026 deadline for Instant Resume in the U.S. and the immediate broadening of other requirements, developers now have clear timelines to prepare. Roku emphasized that these modifications are designed not only to raise technical benchmarks but also to deliver tangible benefits to viewers who depend on the platform for entertainment, news, and live events every day.
