Roku Investigates Washed-Out Colors on Roku TVs & Roku Players After Recent Update

Roku, a leading provider of streaming media players, is facing a wave of user complaints about washed-out colors on its devices following a recent software update. The issue, most prominently reported with Disney+ content, has sparked frustration among users, with similar problems now surfacing across other streaming services. Roku has acknowledged the issue and says it is actively investigating.

The complaints began flooding social media and Roku’s community forums shortly after the update rolled out in late April. Users described HDR content, particularly on Disney+, as appearing dull, with muted colors and reduced contrast that diminish the viewing experience. Popular titles like The Mandalorian and Encanto were cited as examples where vibrant visuals appeared lackluster. “It’s like watching a faded photograph,” one user posted on X. Reports have since expanded to include services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, though Disney+ remains the most affected.

Roku issued an official statement on May 1, confirming the issue is under investigation. The company’s community team posted: “We’re investigating the Disney Plus HDR content that was washed out after the recent update.” To assist with troubleshooting, Roku requested users provide specific details, including affected content, device model, serial number, software version, tracker ID, and app build version. “We appreciate your cooperation, and we’ll keep you posted,” the statement concluded.

The issue appears tied to HDR processing, with some users speculating that the update altered how Roku devices handle color gamut or brightness settings. While technical discussions dominate online forums, the lack of an immediate fix has left many dissatisfied.

Roku’s response has been proactive but limited to information-gathering so far. The company has not provided a timeline for a resolution, leaving users to await further updates. Some have attempted workarounds, such as disabling HDR or adjusting TV settings, but results vary. For now, the issue underscores the challenges of delivering consistent streaming performance across diverse hardware and apps.
