Now Roku hit a major milestone today as they celebrate the eighth anniversary of the release of the very first Roku Player the Roku DVP (N1000).
The Roku DVP was first designed by Netflix with the help of Anthony Wood, now CEO and founder of Roku. Netflix had a dream of selling a player for their new streaming service. However, when the time came to release the “Netflix Player” Netflix quickly realized it would be a better deal not have their own player, allowing them to put their Netflix app on many different devices, such as DVD players and smart TVs, something that would be difficult to do with their own player.
So Netflix gave the Netflix Player to Roku, who released it as the Roku DVP—a deal that seems to have worked out well for everyone.
The Roku DVP came equipped with S-Video, HDMI, and composite video. The player could do SD and 720p HD resolution and even had optical audio out with Ethernet or 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi along with just 64MB for channel storage. Roku’s have come a long way from that start and now have more power, memory, and even better WiFi in the new Roku Stick.
In 2016 Time.com has named the Roku Player one of the most influential gadgets of all time. Maybe as a sign of just how impact the Roku has become in the first quarter of 2016, Roku customers streamed over 2 billion hours.
