These lobbyists will focus on net neutrality and this is the first time Roku has ever hired lobbyists in Washington D.C.. While we do not know their goals, it seems Roku is hoping to have a voice in the battle over net neutrality and its future.
Roku has tangled with telecoms over net neutrality in the past. In 2014, Roku sought the FCC’s help after Comcast blocked users from streaming HBO and Showtime on Roku devices, but allowed it on others. The issue was settled later that year and Comcast subscribers have been able to stream HBO and Showtime on Roku ever since.
When asked about Roku’s new lobbyists, a Roku spokeswoman told Recode that the company “has a long record of engagement in the regulatory and policy discussions regarding net neutrality and we continue to share our views with members of Congress as well as the FCC.”
As the largest streaming media player in the United States, Roku has an invested interest to make sure Roku owners can stream what they want.
