Roku is About to Get a Ton of New Channels

roku-express-1Roku announced yesterday that they will be rolling out new tools for channel creators. These tools are so simple anyone can create a Roku channel without having to do any coding.

The new tools are called the Roku Direct Publisher Platform, which allows anyone with content to easily create a Roku channel.

Many big companies have already taken advantage of the Direct Publishing Platform to launch their channels, including Above Average, Baeble Music, Comedy Dynamics, Cracked, FailArmy, Great Big Story, Mashable, Rolling Stone, Super Deluxe, UPROXX, Us Weekly, and XLTV by XLrator Media.

All you need now to make a Roku channel is the ability to host videos for Roku to stream.

This new publishing system will make it easy for almost anyone to reach the 10 million monthly active Roku users.

There are a few catches. The new channels made with this system will not show up in the universal search but can show up in the user’s personalized “My Feed” section. Channel developers will get full access to statistics such as number of installs, streaming minutes per channel, uninstalls, and other items.

Roku has long been the leader in the number of video apps and this move seems to be focused on keeping Roku on top.
