Roku Devices in Canada May Soon Stop Working if You Don’t Change a Setting

Well it seems if you own a Roku in Canada you need to agree to auto updates or “without these updates, your device may not continue to work.”

Recently Roku started sending out emails to Roku owners in Canada asking for their permission to keep updating their Roku Players. It seems that according to Canada’s anti-spam legislation, it is now illegal for Roku to continue to auto update their devices without first obtaining express consent from the owner or another authorized party. The updated rules are designed to protect Canadians from the “most damaging and deceptive forms of spam and online threats” without interfering with legitimate business.

Here is the email from Roku:

“Dear Roku customer,

From time to time, Roku will release software updates to your connected Roku device(s) in order to roll out new features, update streaming channels, improve product functionality and maintain the quality of your streaming experience.

To provide these automatic software updates, Canadian law requires Roku to obtain your consent, without which we are prohibited from providing you with automatic software updates. Without these updates, your device may not continue to work.

Please take the following simple steps immediately:

  1. Go to www.roku.com
  2. Select My Account from the upper right menu
  3. Sign in with your email and password
  4. Review and agree to the Automatic Software and Applications Updates Agreement
  5. Log out of your account

Thank you and Happy Streaming! ”

So if you live in Canada make sure to give permission to update your Roku before a missed update makes your favorite services stop working.
