Earlier this month, Cord Cutters News surveyed more than 1,000 of our readers about how they cut the cord. From the summer 2024 survey, Roku is the clear leader in the world of cord cutting and is almost twice as popular as its next competitor, the Amazon Fire TV.
In our survey, we asked our readers to list all the devices they use to stream their content. (Adding the numbers won’t add up to 100%, as many people use multiple types of devices.) According to our readers, 67.6% use a Roku, 37.4% use a smart TV, and 34.2% use a Fire TV.
In fourth place are laptops and PCs at 9.45%. In fifth place is Chromecast with 12.7 and in sixth place the Apple TV with 11.6% of the market.
The biggest loser is gaming systems. Only 4% of cord cutters use a gaming system to stream their favorite shows. This is down from 10.5% in 2019.
Key Takeaways
Roku dominates the world of cord cutting, but many Roku owners also use other devices. Saving money by using what you have seems to be more important than having all the same devices.
The big question now is, how will the move to a smart TV-focused world change Roku’s dominance? Roku has repeatedly talked about how Roku TVs are now their focus. Roku is already the #1 smart TV OS sold in the United States. It is possible that as more Americans upgrade their TVs, Roku will continue to grow its dominance over streaming, but the war is far from over, and anything could happen at this point.
Update: We updated our story to correct a typo int he Fire TV percentage.
