Roku Adds a New Internet Speed Test Feature

One of the main reasons for poor streaming is weak Wi-Fi. The internet at your router may be fast, but if the Wi-Fi is poor by your Roku it can cause slow internet and poor streaming.

In the past Roku players only showed Excellent, Good, Poor, or Bad internet reception. Now Roku has added a built-in speed test. When you check your internet connection in the Roku Settings now you get a download speed test.

To find this option, go into Settings on the home screen. In the Settings under Network, you will find the speed of your internet.

I am not sure what update ads this option. All Roku OS9 players we have show the speed. Some Roku TVs still running the older OS 8.XXX version do not offer the speed test it. So, if you don’t have this feature yet you may have to wait for your next update, which should be coming in the next few weeks.

Don’t be surprised if it shows a slower internet speed than you expect. Remember this is the speed that your Roku player sees it can use and Wi-Fi will often show a slower speed than a hardwired Roku player.

So, next time you see buffering make sure to run a speed test to see if your network is the issue before blaming the streaming service.
