Report Suggests Nvidia, AMD Readying New Graphics Cards for September

For the cord cutters and streamers out there looking to build or upgrade their home theater PC (HTPC), a new report says next-gen graphics cards are on the way. DigiTimes points to a September time frame for both AMD and Nvidia to release their newest hardware.

For AMD, new cards will likely feature the company’s RDNA 2 architecture, an update to 2019’s RDNA 1 that also underpins the upcoming Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles. Meanwhile, Nvidia announced its new Ampere architecture earlier this month and it’s possible consumer-grade gaming cards using the new tech could appear later this year.

While the DigiTimes report doesn’t cite specific sources, a September window lines up well with the Computex computer expo, which was moved from June to late September due to the coronavirus pandemic.

We haven’t seen big new releases from AMD or Nvidia for some time. In AMD’s case, its most recent releases include the mid-range Radeon RX 5600 and 5600 XT. Nvidia’s recently offered spec tweaks to existing models under its “Super” line, but the rumored September launches could represent significant architectural advancements for both companies.

Of course, as newer tech is unveiled, prices on older, but still capable graphics cards should likely fall as well. So if you’re itching to snag some high-end gear, keep an eye out for September, and Computex in particular.
