Report: Facebook Passes on Thursday Night NFL Football

Fans of soccer watching matchRight now the NFL is busy accepting bids for streaming rights to Thursday Night NFL Football in 2018. According to reports, there is a growing number of services biding for rights to stream the games. Now we know of at least one service that won’t be bidding.

According to Bloomberg (who has an excellent reputation with their sources), Facebook has decided to pass on Thursday Night Football streaming rights as it is expected the price will once again go up. Last year Amazon paid $50 million for the World Wide streaming rights to NFL Thursday Night Football. Even at that price though it is still a fraction of what CBS and NBC paid as they reportedly combined to pay $450 million for rights to Thursday Night Football. That means just looking at TV rights the NFL made over $500 million from TV rights in the United States.

Facebook has a slowly building streaming since that now has rights to Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, College Football, and more. This is all apart of a bigger plan to move into streaming both live and pre-produced shows. For now, though NFL football on Facebook will have to wait.

We already know that Verizon’s new deal with the NFL will give them streaming rights to Thursday Night Football on mobile devices. The question now is who will have streaming rights on other devices.
