Report: The DOJ May Try to Block AT&T’s Purchase of Time Warner

Recently we have been hearing reports that the AT&T purchase of Time Warner was all but a done deal. (Remember: This is Time Warner the content company that owns channels such as HBO not the cable TV company.)

Now The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is looking at their options to block the purchase by maybe filing an antitrust lawsuit, but they say that the DOJ is working with both companies on a possible settlement with conditions for merger approval. If a deal is not struck, the DOJ is ready to litigate the case in court. AT&T’s deal to buy Time Warner is a $85.4 billion deal in cash and stock.

Recently AT&T extended the deal until early 2018. Under the original deal AT&T could walk away at this point, but it looks like AT&T is serious about buying Time Warner and extended the deadline. AT&T has previously hinted that they would be willing to strike a deal with regulators to buy Time Warner.

Now we have to wait and see if the two sides come up with a deal that everyone can agree to.
