Report: Disney+ Will Have More Subscribers Than Netflix by 2028

Disney+ continues to grow at a steady speed after launching more than two years ago. Since its initial debut, the streamer has expanded into more countries which continues to fuel its growth.

Newly-released data by Digital TV Research projects Disney+ will add 146 million subscribers between 2021 and 2027 to take its total to 276 million. About 106 million of those subscribers will be in the 13 Asian countries under the Hotstar brand in 2027. By 2028, Disney+ will have surpassed Netflix in terms of subscriber count, taking the crown as the streamer with the largest subscription base.

Global SVOD subscriptions overall are projected to reach 1.75 billion by 2027, a 550 million increase from 2021. The biggest contributors will be China and the US which will together account for 48% of the world’s total by 2027.

“China and the US had a similar number of gross subscriptions by end-2021,” said Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research.”Due to government pressure, China’s growth is decelerating, with 374 million subscriptions by 2027. The US will continue to grow, with 456 million subscriptions expected by 2027.”
