Reddit has also sent official copyright infringement notices to several subs including r/Piracy. One of these copyright notices Cord Cutters News was able to see says, “Redditors aren’t allowed to submit material that infringes on someone else’s copyrights.” Reddit also went on to say in the notices to admins of piracy subs that admins must “remove any existing infringing content from (their) community, so Reddit doesn’t get new notices about past content.” This notice forced Reddit’s r/Piracy subreddit to delete almost ten years of posts to avoid being shut down.
A big part of this crackdown has to do with right holders taking a bigger notice of Reddit as a source of piracy. Reddit is always walking a tight rope of being a website open to all topics and respecting the laws like the DMCA. This is a very similar fight that Facebook and YouTube have also had to fight recently. What is new here is Reddit finally shutting down piracy subs like NBAStreams.
This all comes as content owners have taken a more prominent notice of streaming piracy. Lawsuits have been targeting streaming services and the so-called “Kodi Boxes” that offered pirated content. Now it seems that Reddit is the next stop in their efforts to block online piracy. I would look for copyright owners to continue their efforts to crack down on any site they see as promoting piracy.
