Redbox Is Adding 1,500 Kiosks & Continues to Consider a New Streaming Service

If you thought DVDs were a dead medium think again. Redbox is making a major investment in new kiosks.

This week Redbox announced that it is investing in and will be adding 1,500 kiosks to its network of DVD rental locations.

“Millennials see us as a great access point to watching new release movies,” Smith said in an interview with The Chicago Tribune, adding that at $1.50 per night Redbox rentals might be more affordable for younger customers who don’t want to spend $5 or $6 for an on-demand rental. “Contrary to what people think, we actually skew a lot younger in terms of our age makeup.”

As for Redbox’s attempts to break into the streaming market, Smith says the company continues to look for ways to serve customers in this matter.

“So we continue to look at opportunities to be able to serve it both physically and digitally,” he said. “It could be something down the road that we offer if it helps to satisfy consumer demand.”

Redbox has had a few attempts at a streaming service: first, with a Verizon partnership that failed a few years ago and, second, it was been reported in the last year that Redbox was once again testing a streaming service but these rumors ending up going nowhere.
