/r/CordCutters Fall Survey Results

A few days ago we posted a survey on the subreddit CordCutters asking people to fill out a short 10 question survey about being a cord cutter. Over a thousand different people filled out the survey. Clearly the subreddit is growing quickly as our Spring survey only had about a 100 people and our summer survey had just under 500 people respond. Thank you to everyone who took the few minutes to complete this survey.

Question #1

This question is almost unchanged from the summer. Over the summer 88.32% of respondents said cost was the reason and now 88.09% said cost.

Question #2

Not many changes here surprisingly. Fire TV did go up from 3.18% in the summer to 5.39% and Apple TV went down from 14.09% to 11.67%. Roku also went down from 46.36% to 38.24%.

Question #3

More of us seam to be watching less streamed content. Last summer 33.48% watched 3 or less hours. Now 48.98% say they watch less than 2 hours of streamed content each day. At first I thought maybe more people are using Torrents but that number is almost unchanged form the summer.

I am still surprised that 73.68% of respondents say they do not have a data cap. According to a 2012 survey “64 percent of Americans were covered by a cap at the end of 2011.”. (I know people out side of America filled out this survey but it was still overwhelmingly Americans competing the survey looking at IP addresses.) My guess is most people may not know they have a data cap.

83 respondents said they normally go over their data cap in question #5 but only 45 people said they have been threatened by their ISP with cancellation over data caps.

Question #7

The top services mentioned in the comments are YouTube, WatchESPN, and HBOGO. Over all there was no real change where people got their content from.

There was a slight change in how much people pay for their content. Over the summer 47.87% of respondents paid $11 or more a month. Now 65.78% of respondents pay $11 or more a month.

Question #9

It seams that $70 is the pain point that is forced most cord cutters to cancel cable TV. With over 60% of respondents saying their bill was over $70 when they canceled.

Thank you to everyone who filled out this survey. Over a 1,000 responses in less than 10 hours! For the winter survey we will be using a new survey system to make sure there is no issues with overage fees so everyone who wanted to can compete the survey. Honestly I am still shocked that we received so many responses as just a few months ago we didn’t get 500 reposes over several days.
