Variety first reported the news about the launch being cancelled. In a statement to Variety, a Quibi spokesperson said, “While we look forward to launching the Quibi app on April 6, we have decided to cancel our pre-launch event party out of an abundance of caution as we continue to monitor COVID-19. Supporting the health and well-being of everyone involved is our top priority.”
This news comes just after Quibi announced that it has raised a total of $1.75 billion after a second round of fundraising for its short form mobile-only platform. Last week, Quibi also released a full list of content that will be made available when it launches on April 6. The list includes movies delivered in chapters, unscripted series, reboots of game shows, daily news, and more.
For those interested in trying the app out after launch, Quibi is offering a 90 day free trial to anyone who enters their email address on the website to receive updates.
This is just the latest event to be cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. Last week, Seattle’s Emerald City Comic Con was cancelled, concerts were rescheduled, and the James Bond No Time to Die release was postponed. Over the weekend, tech and music festival SXSW was cancelled based on the recommendation of a public health officer and after Netflix, Twitter, Facebook, Apple and Lionsgate pulled out.
