Privacy Continues to be a Major Concern for Cord Cutters When Using Streaming Players

Women Using LaptopA new study from Hub Research called “The Case for Voice Control” shares shows that privacy is a top concern for consumers when it comes to choosing any device, including smart speakers.

4 in 10 consumers own a smart speaker, the study shows, with most consumers using their speaker for entertainment. However, 7 in 10 of those smart speaker owners say that they’re concerned about privacy when it comes to those devices.

Among those who don’t currently have a smart speaker, two thirds name privacy as a main concern holding them back from making a purchase. For most, that concern revolves around the idea of speakers listening in on conversations. 91% said listening to conversations were a concern, with 90% listing data being collected as a concern.

In spite of privacy concerns, voice controlled devices are still gaining popularity among consumers. 80% of consumers say that they’ve used voice command technology. That number is high, but not especially surprising, considering that voice control is available in such a wide variety of devices, from smartphones to remote controls to smart speakers. The number is even higher among younger consumers, with 88% of those ages 16-35 saying they’ve used voice command technology.

These findings are from Hub’s “The Case for Voice Control” study, conducted among 2,512 US consumers in December 2019. The study asked consumers about their opinions on voice control with smartphones, tablets, computers, TV remotes, in-car, and smart speakers.
