TVAddons.ag was a website that helped people install third-party Kodi add-ons. Recently it was sued by Dish, the parent company of Sling TV. Shortly after the lawsuit was announced TVAddons went dark.
Now there has been some changes in the ownership of TVAddons.ag because it recently switched over to a Canadian law firm that has refused to answer any requests for comment as to why it now owns the domain names or what it plans to do with them.
Nathan Betzen, a project manager with Team Kodi, the developers behind the popular media center software, is opening up about what this could mean for users of TVAddons in an interview with Torrent Freak.
If some malware author wanted, he could easily install a watcher that reports back the users IP address and everything they were doing in Kodi. If the law firm is actually an anti-piracy group, that seems like the likeliest thing I can think of, he adds.
If its just a holding group, then people [in control of the domain/repo] could do whatever they can think of. Want a few million incredibly inefficient bit mining boxes? Betzen speculates.
Even if this law firm has no plans to abuse its power, it is possible that it is just holding the domain as part of a sale. If the domains ever get sold the new owner could do anything it wants to with them.
There is some history here of third-party add-ons being used in ways the end user didnt know about. Earlier in 2017 a popular third-party add-on turned users into a botnet to DDoS a website in an effort to take it down.
For now users of TVAddons are left wondering and waiting to see what happens next.
