What Are the Most Popular Subscription Streaming Services? We Asked Our Readers

There are now over 100 subscription and free streaming services. With so many, finding the right ones for you can be a bit confusing. So confusing it is often one of the most popular questions we see on social media and read in our emails.

We asked over 1,100 of our readers what services they use. It may be no surprise that Netflix is in the lead at 77.3%, but let’s take a look at all the others.

The following are the top 10 most popular services according to our readers:

The big surprise here is the strong showing of Amazon. We have known for some time that Amazon dominates other video stores, but the huge lead over iTunes and Google Play is surprising. The dominance of Amazon may explain reports that Apple and Amazon have decided to work together with Amazon Video is coming to the Apple TV.

What may be surprising is that Google Play is more popular than iTunes, but maybe that shouldn’t be a surprise. Android has an 86.2% market share compared to iOS at just 12.9%. Google Play is also available on Android TV, Chromecast, and Roku streaming players. This means Google Play is available on over half of all U.S. streaming players. As of January 2017 the Apple TV only represented 11.9% of the set-top box market in the United States down from 13.5% in 2014.

Hulu also saw a jump from 40.2% in Spring 2017 to 45.2% in this Summer 2017 survey. Some of that growth is likely driven from the new Hulu Live TV Beta that also includes the traditional video on-demand service.
