Plex on Wednesday launched its new “Discover Together” feature that lets users share ratings, watchlists, watch history, and comments with each other. Plex said the community tool give audiences a more “personalized, human discovery” for video streaming content.

With “Discover Together,” viewers can see what their friends are watching, adding to their watchlists, reviewing, and rating in the Activity Feed. Users can also start watching a movie or show directly from the Activity Feed.

Under the People tab, Plex users can view current friends, manage friend requests and suggestions, and see recommendations from Plex based on the user’s shared community and “personal discoverability.” You can see your own watch history, list, ratings, and friends on your profile or edit privacy settings. If you click on a movie or show in Plex, the app will also show whether any of your friends have watched it and what they thought about it.

The feature works a bit like the IMDB app or Goodreads, Amazon’s book cataloging app. You can see books friends want to read or have finished reading, as well as ratings. The app also lets you interact with updates from friends and other users by liking and commenting on posts.

“Viewers are more likely to watch recommendations from people they know and trust, and to integrate that into the viewing experience is surprisingly something that has not been done before,” Plex CEO Keith Valory said in a statement.

“Discover Together” had 150,000 early participants across mobile and web in its beta last year. The feature is free and available on Plex online, the mobile app, as well as streaming media players like Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android or Google TV, and Roku. “Discover Together” is also supported on smart TVs like LG, Hisense, Samsung, Sony, and VIZIO along with tablets and game consoles.
