Plex Launches its Free Ad-Supported Streaming Service

plex

Earlier this year, Plex announced it would be launching a new, ad-supported streaming service with no subscription fee. Today, the service went live globally and you can now stream thousands of titles across a variety of genres like Action, Sci-Fi, Comedy, Drama, Thriller, Anime, Kids & Family, and more for free on their service.

“Plex was born out of a passion for media and entertainment, and offering free ad-supported premium movies and TV shows is just the latest step in our mission to bring all your favorite content together in one place,” said Keith Valory, CEO of Plex. “What started more than a decade ago as a passion project to make accessing media on connected devices easier has evolved into the most comprehensive streaming platform in the industry, used by millions of people around the world.”

This adds another free streaming service to the pool, putting Plex in competition with other free platforms like Crackle, Tubi, and more. These types of free streaming services rely on ads to generate revenue rather than charging users a  monthly subscription fee.

In their press release, Plex describes themselves as “A True One-Stop Media Service,” Plex is the world’s most comprehensive streaming platform, bringing free, on-demand movies and TV shows together with a user’s favorite podcasts, web shows, news, music, over-the-air live and recorded television, as well as personal media collections, all through one beautiful interface, from any device or platform.

Plex reaches more than 200 countries and is the most widely available AVOD streaming service in the industry and has about one third the number of ads that traditional TV shows. They’ve partnered with some big industry names like MGM, Lionsgate, Warner Bros and more to bring a wide variety of content to the platform.

Here’s a small sample of some of the titles available at launch:

You can watch Plex on Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, smart TVs, Android and iOS mobile platforms, Xbox, PlayStation, Amazon Fire TV, on Plex’s website, and more.
