PlayStation Vue Wants You to Know You Don’t Need a PlayStation

For some time now, PlayStation Vue has struggled to overcome the idea that you need a PlayStation game system to use their streaming service. While PlayStation Vue works on a wide range of devices we still often get asked if you need a PlayStation. Many have also pointed to the name as a reason Sony is trailing behind newcomers like DIRECTV NOW.

Back in 2017, Sony started to heavily push the idea you don’t need a PlayStation to watch PlayStation Vue through social media ads like this one:

Recently Sony even started to include at the end of their ads on TV that the service works with other devices. Now Sony is making the fact that you don’t need a PlayStation gaming system a bigger part of their new set of TV ads.

After years of pouring money into ads explaining that you don’t need a PlayStation, maybe it is time to just change the name of the service. Sony Vue or Vue TV are both great names that would allow Sony to build off the brand they have now while expanding the service to new customers who struggled with the name.

Recently there have been calls from some analysts to shut down PlayStation Vue as Sony has yet to hit 1 million subscribers while newcomers like DIRECTV NOW have already done so. For now, Sony says they plan to keep the service running but in an ever-growing field of competitors PlayStation Vue’s future is far from certain.

With over eight major live TV streaming services and a growing number of smaller services at some point, someone is going to shut down. Now that does not mean cord cutting is in trouble, just that at some point there are more services than the market can support. If Sony doesn’t want to be one of the companies shutting down their live TV service a name change will likely go a long way to make sure PlayStation Vue is here for years to come.
