Cord Cutters News

PlayStation Vue, Philo, YouTube TV, Sling, Hulu, & Others Have Almost 8 Million Subscribers

In just four years, live TV streaming services went from zero subscribers in 2014 to end 2018 with 7.7 million subscribers. These services include PlayStation VueSling TV, Hulu, Philo, and fuboTV.

Cord cutting overall has reportedly topped 30 million subscribers. While this growth has been strong, it is still very interesting to see that most cord cutters still do not use a live TV streaming service.

For years, there has been a lot of talk about cord cutting trying to replicate cable TV. For some, this is very true; however, it looks like most cord cutters seem to be happy with their on-demand services and other devices like antennas.

Even when including streaming services like Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW, total pay-TV subscribers dropped from 89.1 million in 2014 to 87.3 million in 2018.

Many pay-TV providers had hoped a streaming service would offset losses from cord cutting. For now, it has helped, but it has yet to be a 1 for 1 replacement for cable TV. Most cord cutters are not interested in a live TV streaming service.
