PlayStation Vue Has 670,000 Subscribers Far Behind Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW

Today at the Pay TV show in Denver Joel Espelien a Senior Analyst at TDG gave a detailed report on the state of the TV industry with a heavy focus on streaming services.

During the talk, we got an updated look at live TV streaming services One of the most interesting things was a report o the state of PlayStation Vue’s subscriber numbers. So far PlayStation Vue has been very tight with their numbers.

Now TDG has reported that they believe PlayStation Vue has 670,000 subscribers right now. That puts PlayStation Vue well behind Sling TV at 2.21 million and the far newer DIRECTV NOW with 1.2 Million subscribers. Looking at how quickly everyone is growing about a year ago Discovery CEO said DIRECTV NOW and PlayStation Vue both had about 400,000 subscribers. If that was true DIRECTV NOW has about tripled in size and PlayStation Vue only added 270,000 subscribers.

In total TDG says there is about 5.1 Million live TV streaming subscribers. That means Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and DIRECTV NOW controls over 4 million of them. All the other live TV streaming services are fighting for the remaining 1 million streaming live TV customers.

Note these numbers are likely from before PS Vue lost Sinclair locals.

With even more services like Verizon and T-Mobile getting ready to launch it raises the question if all of these services can survive. Clearly, some services won’t survive the only question is who will fail first.
