PlayStation Vue Is Giving Away Free Upgrades for Six Months

Over the weekend PlayStation Vue started handing out free upgrades to its Elite plan. That meant if you subscribed to a less expensive plan you would still pay that cheaper price but get full access to the channels available on the Elite plan.

Not everyone is getting this upgrade. It seems almost random who is getting it and who is not but overall it seems to mostly be for subscribers of its now discontinued Slim plans.

This upgrade will give lucky PlayStation Vue subscribers access to the $54.99 a month Elite Slim plan that includes 90-plus HD channels for six months. After the free upgrade ends, subscribers will automatically be returned to the plan they had before the free upgrade.

At first it was reported that this would be a weekend-long upgrade similar to other free upgrades that PlayStation Vue had done in the past but this time it will be for six months. That is double the previous three-month free upgrade.

Cord Cutters News did contact Sony for comment, but Sony never replied to our request. So we do not know why suddenly it is once again sending out the free upgrades. Though the timing could be an effort to fight off new entries in the market such as DIRECTV NOW, Hulu, Charter, CenturyLink, and YouTube TV along with older ones such as Sling TV. Or it could be an effort to keep unhappy subscribers from jumping ship when their price goes up $10 after they eliminate the Slim plans in a few months.
