PlayStation 5 Shatters Sales Records With 74.9 Million Units Sold

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced record-breaking sales for the PlayStation 5 console during the 2024 holiday season. The company sold an impressive 9.5 million PS5 units in the third quarter of the fiscal year (October to December), surpassing its previous holiday sales record and bringing total lifetime sales to 74.9 million units.

This record-breaking performance was likely fueled by the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro last fall, although Sony did not disclose specific sales figures for the new console. The strong sales momentum puts the PS5 just 1.5 million units behind the PS4’s sales pace at the same point in its lifecycle.

The surge in console sales contributed to Sony’s overall profitability, with the company reporting a higher-than-expected profit of 469.3 billion yen ($3.05 billion) for the quarter.

In addition to console sales, Sony also saw a significant increase in game sales, reaching 95.9 million units sold in Q3 2024, compared to 89.7 million in the previous quarter. This growth was driven by strong third-party titles, as first-party game sales experienced a decline. Game software revenue reached 784 billion yen ($5.1 billion), compared to 733 billion yen in Q3 2023.

During its webcast, Sony highlighted the success of titles like Astro Bot and Helldivers 2, reaffirming its commitment to expanding its family-friendly and live service game offerings. The company also reported an increase in PlayStation Network (PSN) monthly active users, which rose from 123 million to 129 million.

Looking ahead, Sony expressed “high expectations” for game sales in 2025, with anticipated releases including first-party titles Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei, as well as major third-party launches like Grand Theft Auto 6. The continued success of the PlayStation 5, coupled with a strong lineup of upcoming games, positions Sony for continued growth in the gaming market.
